Choose to use your power for good

Everyday we get to choose whether we use our power to do good or to cause pain. It’s up to you.

The Choice

The cumulative impact of personal choices made by every global citizen shapes our world. Systems of oppression such as racism, xenophobia,  and self-sabotage exist because we uphold their power with our daily choices. We can choose between being conscious or unaware of the impact of our behaviors; between being respectful or demeaning; between being unifying or dividing; between being loving or fearful, etc. We shape our inner and outer worlds by choosing the former options over the latter ones. That is, using our power for good.

Doing “good” on a daily basis

What I am proposing is challenging yet doable. I believe we possess the ability to learn from our collective choices and reverse the current trend of allowing fear to lead our daily actions. Letting fear guide us leads to catastrophic consequences on both the individual and collective levels. Fear-based thinking led a supervisor to continuously promote males over highly-qualified women of color; it led someone to massacre Muslims at a mosque in New Zealand; and it led a friend to deny the impact of their hurtful actions. Conversely, trust and love-thinking can lead a Human Resources staff member to confront the supervisor’s bias, family to interrupt and educate their loved ones about Islamophobic beliefs, and a friend to admit their harm. Speak and act with intention, choosing actions that lead to trust and love over fear and doubt. Choose to do good.

Let’s do good together!

With love and solidarity,

Dr. Annice E. Fisher
